Suffering from IBS? SHEN can help you…

Irritable bowel syndrome is a growing issue throughout the world. In recent years there has been a lot of research into the gut and how much it affects our entire body and our overall wellbeing. Recognition that having a healthy gut is a vital part of having a healthy body and a healthy mind is a great step in the right direction.

IBS can be incredibly painful. People suffer from debilitating stomach ache, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation or both. It can lead to backache and haemorrhoids if left untreated. It can also lead to anxiety especially if the person suffering is constantly concerned about how it will affect them their day and how they can manage it when they go out.

How can SHEN help relieve IBS?

SHEN therapy recognises that the body stores emotions. Specific emotions are stored in particular areas down the torso. We know that the body experiences an automatic, involuntary physiological contraction in response to pain. The body can’t differentiate between physical or emotional pain. It contracts around either, which is why painful emotions stay stored and joyful ones dissipate quickly.

The Solar plexus stores anger, fears, anxiety, and excitement. This area is in between the sternum and the navel. The sacral area, which is between the belly button and the public bone is a large storage area for emotions such as guilt, shame, embarrassment, powerlessness. When these emotions are repressed by these automatic contractions, our digestive tract becomes unable to function optimally.

Too many of these constrictions down the digestive tract disturb the process of peristalsis, which is the involuntary constriction and relaxation of muscles in the intestines that creates wave-like movements to help food move through the digestive tract.

As a result, the digestive system can’t work properly causing stomach pain, swelling and bloating, cramping, and regular disruptions to bowel movements – either diarrhoea or constipation, or both.

In SHEN ® Therapy, we use a very specific protocol to relax the tensions and constrictions at the Solar plexus and Sacral area of the torso. Usually 2 sessions are required over a 48 hour period.

What to expect During and After an IBS session:

Clients usually experience a great deal of rumbling in the stomach area during the treatment. At times, clients will release gases in the treatment. All these experiences are quite normal and usually a really good indication that the protocol is working. Sometimes clients may experienced an increase in bowel movements after the protocol but usually this will stabilise.
